Durga Puja 2026: Bengal's Grand Festival of the Goddess

Durga Puja is the most important festival of West Bengal — a five-day grand celebration of Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura. Spanning the last five days of Navratri (Shashthi to Dashami), it transforms entire cities into open-air art galleries with elaborately crafted pandals and clay idols. Durga Puja 2026 dates follow the Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month Ashwin — the main celebration (Mahasaptami to Vijaya Dashami) is expected in October 2026.

About Durga Puja

Durga Puja celebrates the ten-armed Goddess Durga's victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura after nine nights of battle. In Bengal, it is far more than a religious occasion — it is the defining cultural, artistic, and social event of the year. Artisans spend months creating towering clay idols of Durga and her four children (Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartik, Ganesh). Community "pandals" — temporary structures ranging from bamboo-and-cloth tents to elaborate architectural replicas — house the idols for five days. The festival culminates on Vijaya Dashami (also called Dussehra in North India) when idols are carried in procession to be immersed in rivers.

The Myth of Goddess Durga

The demon Mahishasura received a boon from Brahma that he could not be killed by any man or god. With this power, he conquered the three worlds and overthrew the gods from heaven. The gods, led by Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva, combined their divine energies (shakti) and created a supreme feminine force — Goddess Durga. She was given weapons by each of the gods and rode a lion into battle.

The battle between Durga and Mahishasura raged for nine days. On the tenth day, Durga pierced Mahishasura's chest with her trident and beheaded him. This victory of the divine feminine over arrogant demonic power is the heart of Navratri and Durga Puja. The ten days of the festival represent the nine days of battle and the tenth day of victory (Vijaya Dashami).

In the Bengali tradition, Durga is also seen as a daughter returning home to her parents with her children. The immersion of the idol on Vijaya Dashami represents her return to Mount Kailash, her husband Shiva's abode — which is why Bengali women touch the feet of the idol and offer sindoor (vermilion) as a farewell before immersion.

Durga Puja as UNESCO Heritage

UNESCO inscribed the "Durga Puja in Kolkata" on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2021, recognising it as one of the world's largest open-air festivals and a unique expression of public art, craftsmanship, and community celebration.

The Five Days of Durga Puja

1

Mahalaya (Pre-festival)

The fortnight begins with Mahalaya — the first invocation of Goddess Durga. Families wake before dawn to listen to the iconic Birendra Krishna Bhadra radio recitation of Mahishasura Mardini. This marks the descent of Durga to earth.

2

Shashthi — Bodhon (6th day)

The goddess is ritually invoked (Bodhon) and the puja formally begins. Evening prayers and the lighting of lamps mark the official start. Pandals are opened to the public.

3

Saptami to Navami (7th–9th days)

These are the three main puja days. Priests perform elaborate rituals with 108 lotuses, sandal paste, incense, and offerings. Communities visit pandal to pandal (pandal hopping) day and night. Cultural events, dhunuchi dance, and dhaak (drum) music fill the air.

4

Sindoor Khela (Dashami morning)

On the morning of Vijaya Dashami, married Bengali women apply sindoor to the goddess's feet and to each other in the Sindoor Khela ceremony — a joyful farewell to the goddess.

5

Vijaya Dashami — Immersion

The idols are carried in grand processions (shobhajatra) to rivers, lakes or the sea for immersion. The immersion marks Durga's return to Mount Kailash. People embrace and exchange sweets, wishing each other "Subho Bijoya."
