Vishu 2026: Kerala New Year — Date, Vishukkani & Traditions
Vishu is the traditional New Year of Kerala, celebrated on the first day of the Malayalam month of Medam, which corresponds to Mesha Sankranti (the solar transit into Aries). In 2026, Vishu falls on 14 April. The most distinctive ritual is Vishukkani — the auspicious first sight at dawn — carefully arranged the night before so it is the first thing seen upon waking, setting the tone for prosperity throughout the year.

About Vishu
Vishu marks the astronomical New Year in Kerala, occurring on the day the Sun enters the sidereal zodiac sign of Mesha (Aries) — known as Mesha Sankranti. Unlike Onam, which is a harvest festival, Vishu is deeply astrological and spiritual in character. The date is fixed by the solar calendar and falls on April 14 every year (occasionally April 13 due to the exact moment of the solar transit). Vishu is celebrated with the Vishukkani ritual, the exchange of gifts (Vishukkaineettam), new clothes, fireworks, and the traditional Vishu Sadhya feast.
Significance of Vishu
The word "Vishu" means equal in Sanskrit, referring to the equinox — a day when the sun is positioned directly over the equator and day and night are of equal length. This astronomical event marks the beginning of the solar new year and has been celebrated in Kerala for centuries as a time of renewal, gratitude and prayer for abundance in the year ahead.
The Vishukkani ritual is rooted in the belief that the first thing one sees on New Year's morning determines the quality of the entire year. Families arrange an auspicious display (kani) the night before — featuring a golden cucumber, coconut, ripe jackfruit, betel leaves and areca nut, flowers (particularly konna/golden shower blossoms), coins, gold jewellery, a mirror and a lamp — all in a bell-metal vessel (uruli) placed before a deity image.
The Vishukkaineettam tradition — where elders give younger family members coins or gifts at the time of Vishukkani — symbolises the sharing of prosperity at the start of the new year. It strengthens family bonds and carries the blessing of the elders into the new year.
How Vishu is Celebrated
Vishukkani Arrangement (night before)
The night before Vishu, the eldest woman of the house carefully arranges the Vishukkani in the puja room — placing konna flowers, a golden cucumber, coconut, jackfruit, betel leaves, coins, a lit lamp and a mirror before the idol of Lord Krishna or Vishnu. Curtains are drawn so no one accidentally sees it before dawn.
Vishukkani Darshan at Dawn
Before sunrise on Vishu morning, all family members are led one by one (eyes closed) to the puja room to view the Vishukkani. The sight of this auspicious arrangement is believed to bring prosperity and good fortune for the entire year.
Vishukkaineettam — Gift Giving
Elders give younger family members Vishukkaineettam — coins or cash gifts — as a blessing for the new year. Children collect these gifts from parents, grandparents and relatives.
New Clothes (Puthukodi)
Wearing new clothes on Vishu is an important tradition. Elders gift new clothes (Puthukodi) to younger members of the family, symbolising a fresh start.
Temple Visit and Sadhya
Families visit temples (especially Guruvayur and Sabarimala) for special Vishu puja. The day concludes with a traditional Vishu Sadhya feast and evening fireworks, which light up the Kerala sky on Vishu night.
