About Onam

Onam is Kerala's grandest festival, celebrated during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September). It marks the annual homecoming of the mythical King Mahabali, a beloved ruler whose reign is remembered as a golden age of prosperity and equality. The 10-day celebration begins on Atham and reaches its peak on Thiruvonam, the tenth and most sacred day. From the elaborate Pookalam flower rangoli at the entrance of every home to the spectacular Vallamkali (snake boat race) on the backwaters, Onam is a festival that celebrates Kerala's culture, nature and community spirit.

The Legend of King Mahabali

The heart of Onam is the legend of King Mahabali (Maveli), a benevolent asura king who ruled Kerala in mythological times. During his reign, there was no poverty, no deceit and no discrimination — all people lived as equals, and the land overflowed with abundance. His subjects loved him deeply, and his fame spread across the three worlds.

Lord Vishnu, approached by the Devas who feared Mahabali's growing power, incarnated as the dwarf Brahmin Vamana. Vamana appeared before Mahabali and asked for three paces of land. The generous king agreed without hesitation. Vamana then grew to cosmic proportions — his first step covered the earth, the second covered the heavens, and for the third, Mahabali offered his own head. Vishnu pressed him down to the netherworld, but moved by Mahabali's devotion and generosity, granted him one boon: to visit his beloved subjects once a year.

Onam is that annual homecoming. Every year, Keralites welcome their beloved king with flower carpets, feasts, music and dance — a celebration that transforms Kerala into a land of joy and colour. Onam transcends religious boundaries and is celebrated by all communities as Kerala's own national festival.

Onam Traditions and Celebrations

1

Pookalam — Flower Carpet

From the first day (Atham), women and children arrange fresh flowers into intricate circular patterns (Pookalam) at the entrance of their homes. Each day a new ring is added, with the largest and most elaborate design completed on Thiruvonam day.

2

Onam Sadhya — Grand Feast

The Onam Sadhya is a ceremonial vegetarian feast served on a banana leaf, featuring 26 or more traditional dishes. Families and communities gather to enjoy this elaborate meal — it is the centrepiece of the festival.

3

Vallamkali — Snake Boat Race

The spectacular Nehru Trophy Boat Race and other Vallamkali events take place on Kerala's backwaters. Teams of rowers in long snake boats (Chundan Vallams) compete to the rhythm of traditional songs, drawing thousands of spectators.

4

Kaikottikali — Clapping Dance

Women perform Kaikottikali (Thiruvathirakali), a graceful circular dance with rhythmic clapping, typically wearing white sarees with gold borders. This dance is performed around the Pookalam on festival evenings.

5

Pulikali — Tiger Dance

On the fourth day of Onam (Nalamonam), performers paint their bodies to resemble tigers and hunters, dancing through the streets in a vibrant folk performance. Pulikali is most famous in Thrissur.
