About Janmashtami

Janmashtami, also known as Gokulashtami or Krishna Jayanti, celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna is believed to have been born at midnight on the Ashtami (eighth day) of the dark fortnight of the Bhadrapada month. Devotees observe fasts throughout the day, perform midnight puja, and celebrate with bhajans, kirtans and dramatisations of Krishna's life.

The Birth Story of Shri Krishna

Lord Krishna is believed to have been born at midnight on the Ashtami (eighth day) of the dark fortnight of the Bhadrapada month. According to traditional accounts, he was born in a prison in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, at a time when the tyrant king Kansa ruled the region.

Shortly after the birth, Vasudeva is said to have carried the infant Krishna across the Yamuna river to Gokul, where he was raised by Nanda and Yashoda. The accounts of Krishna's childhood, his playfulness, his protection of Vrindavan, and later his role as a guide in the Mahabharata, are central to Hindu devotional tradition.

Janmashtami is observed with fasting, bhajans, kirtans, and enactments of scenes from Krishna's life. The Nishita Puja β€” performed at midnight β€” marks the moment of birth. Celebrations are particularly significant in Mathura, Vrindavan and Dwarka.

Fasting and Preparation

Devotees observe a fast from sunrise on Janmashtami. Preparations include decorating a cradle (jhula) for the idol of Bal Gopal and arranging the puja items.

Nishita Puja (Midnight)

The main puja is performed at Nishita Kaal β€” the midnight hour when Lord Krishna is said to have been born. The idol is bathed with Panchamrit, dressed in new clothes and placed in the jhula.

3

Paran (Breaking the Fast)

The fast is typically broken on Navami after sunrise, once the prescribed Paran window opens. The Paran time is panchang-based and varies by year β€” see the timing card above.
