About Muharram / Ashura
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic Hijri (lunar) calendar. It is considered one of the four sacred months, and the tenth day โ Ashura โ holds deep spiritual significance. For Shia Muslims, Ashura commemorates the martyrdom of Imam Hussain ibn Ali at the Battle of Karbala (680 CE). For Sunni Muslims, Ashura is also a day of fasting in remembrance of Prophet Moses and the crossing of the Red Sea. Both communities observe the day with prayer and reflection.
Historical Context
The Islamic Hijri calendar began in 622 CE with Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina. Muharram has held sacred status since then. The events of Karbala in 680 CE (61 AH) โ when Imam Hussain ibn Ali and his companions were martyred โ gave the day of Ashura additional significance for Shia Muslims worldwide. The day is observed with solemnity, remembrance and du'a (supplication).
Significance of Muharram
Muharram is one of the four sacred months mentioned in the Quran, during which acts of piety and prayer are especially encouraged. Ashura is a day of fasting (Sunnah fast on the 9th and 10th of Muharram), prayer and community gatherings. The month is observed with deep reverence by Muslim communities across India.
Observances and Practices
Muharram is observed through prayers, fasting on Ashura (9th and 10th of Muharram), du'a (supplications) and reading of Islamic history. Shia communities hold Majalis (gatherings of remembrance) and processions. Community langar and charitable acts are also common in some regions of India.
