About Karwa Chauth

Karwa Chauth is a one-day festival observed by Hindu women, primarily in North India. Married women fast from sunrise until they sight the moon on the night of Karwa Chauth, praying for the long life and well-being of their husbands. The moonrise time is specific to each city and is an important part of the observance.

Karwa Chauth Vrat Katha

According to a commonly narrated Karwa Chauth vrat katha, a merchant had seven sons and one daughter. After marriage, the daughter observed the Karwa Chauth fast with prayers for her husband's long life and well-being. As the day progressed without food or water, she became distressed.

Seeing their sister's difficulty, her brothers tried to help her break the fast early. They arranged a light at a distance so that it appeared as though the moon had risen. Believing that she had seen the moon, she offered water and ended her fast.

The traditional account says that breaking the fast before the proper moon sighting led her through a difficult period. Realising the mistake, she observed the vrat again with devotion, patience and ritual discipline.

Her prayers and steadfast observance are said to have restored happiness and good fortune in her married life. The katha is therefore associated with devotion, prayer, moon sighting and the wish for a spouse's well-being.
